This is just a first attempt at an animation made with SketchUp and Gimp.

Volume x^2.gif

It represents rotating the region enclosed by and around the y-axis. The steps represented are

  1. Presenting the region;
  2. Superimposing horizontal rectangles;
  3. Revolving a single rectangle to produce a washer;
  4. Revolving the remaining rectangles to produce a volume approximation with washers;
  5. Realizing the final volume as a limit.
